Supporting Rada with a Seed capital of USD10,000

At the idea stage of Rada, Nile Breweries under the kickstart Youth social Enterprise Programme supported Rada Shoes. The Kickstart challenge invited applications from youth with social enterprises across the country and out of 600 business concepts submitted, Rada made it to the vigorous pitching competition- a mutli stage elimination process judged by leading business personalities in the country.

Coaching services were provided by Enterprise Uganda, and televised by NTV Uganda. Rada emerged a winner of seed capital grant of 10,000. The seed capital sprouted and resulted into the current business at Rada. From 5 pairs a day, Rada grew up to 100 pairs per day. Rada leveraged the capital and invested another USD20,000 from debt and equity, and set up modern manufacturing facility that is still expanding. We moved from 2 employees at that time and created an additional 12 jobs as a result of the grant and more and more children were able to access high quality shoes at affordable prices.

Training in Enterprise Development Programme

Brian is enthusiastic, self-driven and courageous Production Engineer who always strives to achieve a very high standard in whatever is undertaken, capable of undertaking challenging tasks without compromising, working in a dynamic environment.

Ever since Brian took over the positon, he has overhauled the operations function overseeing a transformation in quality control and operational efficiency doubling daily output from the same team. He is also charged with ensuring value optimsation from the team, while advising on productivity maximization and output optimsation. Brian is pro-people and passionate about manufacturing given his previous experience with Roofings Limited and Kampala Cement Limited.

Brian has a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Makerere University, with several other short term trainings in production and manufacturing Engineering.

The training has resulted into improved formalization of structures in management and operations including business plan development, development of policies and procedures, acquisition of necessary licenses and development of budgets and targets along practicing corporate financial discipline.

The training also warranted Rada as ready for Finance having acquired several other related trainings under Iris Consulting, Bid Network and IFDC.

Supporting skills training by PSFU through SDF

The Skills Development Facility is implemented by Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) on behalf of Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. The facility supports employer-led short-term training and recognition of prior learning as well as increased access to internships for TVET students.

SDF has co-financed the improvement of existing skills training systems at Rada Shoes for 5 months since march 2020. Rada demonstrated the need for skills improvement to SDF through a formal and fair application and assessment process that subsequently led to a matching grant of about USD12,000 and Rada matched it with USD3,000 as matching fund.

Rada leveraged grant and this led to improved products in quality and cost, as well efficiency in plant utilization. Actual results include creation of 7 new jobs in production and production support, increased output from 100 pairs of shoes per day to 500 pairs per day; positive customer feedback to appreciate product quality and increased access to school shoes by rural school going children.

Scaling up Social Impact by Open Capital Advisors (OCA)

Rada Shoes Limited has worked with Open Capital Advisors (OCA) with support from Oxfam Novib since January 2019. OCA provided training under “Oxfam-Open Capital Business Workshop”. The training retooled Rada top managers on the salient practical issues for business turn around. Allan Ninsiima and Brian Murangira benefitted from this training, who subsequently trained the whole team.

Consequent engagements included on-factory visits, training, coaching and developing a Rada Operations model that transformed Rada Production and operations. The model is still a key reference tool at Rada.

In December 2019, OCA supported by Oxfam Novib engaged Rada Shoes in a challenge for supporting socially impactful enterprises. The challenge involved submitting a concept note and successful enterprises would move to the next level of pitching to a team of OCA and Oxfam Novib. Rada Shoes was among the businesses that successfully reached the pitching session and later emerged the winner of Euro 15,000.

The grant has been used to get Rada School shoes certified by UNBS, purchase additional industrial stitching machines and creation of an additional 6 (six) jobs full time in manufacturing.
